I was born in 1981 in the beautiful German city of Bayreuth and grew up in a small village nearby among my three older siblings. I spent more than a decade at school, undoubtedly being taught something, but I don't seem to recall what exactly. Once I graduated from high school, I decided to go to college (our German equivalent of it, that is). I actually considered going to film school for a while, but then decided to get a degree as a translator, studying English, German and electrical & mechanical engineering in Hildesheim, which is a 4.5 hour train ride away from my parents. Meanwhile I graduated and am now a certified translator.
In my spare time I sit in front of my computer (way too much), listen to music (incessantly), watch movies (quite often) or read (not often enough). Futhermore, I took guitar lessons for about 12 years. I mostly learned to play the classical guitar and only later bought an electric guitar and started strumming chords. I even ended up playing in a rock band for a year, and although the music we played together was anything but professional, band practice was always great fun.
I'm also interested in photography, and some of my pictures can be viewed at the Fotocommunity. I mostly take pictures with my digital camera these days, since I like seeing right away how the picture I took turned out. I do enjoy traditional photography as well, however. It has more of a surprise element when you pick up the developed pictures.
Apart from that, I recently became interested in comic books. I grew up with comic books like "Mickey Mouse", so for a long time that's what I thought of when I thought of comics. Then, however, I came across the "Wolverine" comics Greg Rucka wrote, which completely changed my perception of comic books. The "Wolverine" comics were nicely drawn, which initially captured my attention, but it really was Greg Rucka's story-telling that made me come back for more. I like the fact that in his Wolverine stories, the fact that Wolverine is a superhero of sorts isn't that relevant. Anyway, he stopped writing for "Wolverine" and I quickly lost interest in the stories again. Greg Rucka went on to writing the "Gotham Central" comics, which also focussed more on the Gotham Police Department rather than all the superheroes and villains around town, so I greatly enjoyed those, too. Then they stopped making "Gotham Central", because they always stop making all the good things, and now Greg Rucka writes for "52", which I first didn't enjoy as much (too many superheroes), but I meanwhile got into it and so I'd recommend that, too.
I also enjoy tea a lot and drink lots of it if I have the opportunity. Some of my favorites are Celestial Seasoning's Tension Tamer and Bigelow Tea's Constant Comment, as well as all sorts of different black teas I buy at the tea store of my choice. Another great tea I found is called Magic Green, which I bought at the KaDeWe in Berlin and haven't been able to find elsewhere since.
I also got me a blog meanwhile to rant and rave about life, which will have relatively up-to-date information about what's going on with me lately or what I've been thinking about. So go look at enVanna (my English blog) and, if you understand German, also check out deVanna (my German blog).
